About Vivian

Hi, I am a violin tutor with over 10 years of experience and a Bachelor of Arts in Music Theory with a Violin Specialization. I especially enjoy working with adult beginners and returning learners who are picking the instrument back up after years away. There is something special about helping someone rediscover a skill they once had or always wanted to try.
Much of my teaching centers on improvisation and non-classical genres like jazz and blues, since these styles open up so much creative freedom. I use simple exercises to build confidence early, along with ergonomic positioning so playing feels comfortable rather than strained. Mindfulness plays a role too, and I encourage students to slow down and actually enjoy the process instead of rushing toward perfection.
I teach across genres including Folk, Blues, Easy Classical, and Worship music, so lessons stay varied and personal to each student. Some students want to play simple worship songs for church, while others just want to jam and explore blues riffs for fun. Either way, we build skills at a pace that feels natural to you.

About the lesson

My approach focuses on precise pitch and aural acuity. Playing in tune is one of the hardest parts of violin, and I make it a priority from day one. We work on intonation accuracy through steady, focused practice rather than rushing through pieces.
I use drone practice often, since it trains the ear to hear pitch more clearly against a steady tone. Over time, students develop a refined ear for pitch that stays with them in every piece they play. This becomes even more important as they move across positions on the fingerboard, where staying in tune gets trickier.
Some of my students come from a pop or contemporary singing background and want their violin playing to match the precision they already have in their voice. Others have a strong classical vocal foundation and are used to disciplined ear training, so I build on that skill and apply it directly to the violin. In both cases, I offer tailored guidance to ensure their notes are perfectly in tune.
Good intonation is not just a technical goal, it is what makes a performance sound alive. We'll make your violin sing beautifully.
