About Summer

Hi, I am a violin tutor with over 10 years of experience and a Master of Music in Violin Performance. I specialize in preparing violinists for professional and youth orchestra auditions. My own experience performing in competitive audition settings shapes exactly how I coach my students today.

I focus heavily on standard orchestral excerpts, audition-level scales, and mock audition practice under realistic pressure. Most of my students are advancing players working toward a specific seat in a youth orchestra, community ensemble, or professional group. We rehearse repeatedly under simulated audition conditions, including performing behind a screen for unbiased feedback.

About the lesson

My teaching approach is designed specifically for students preparing for orchestra auditions. Excerpt preparation is central to this process, since most auditions are judged almost entirely on standard orchestral excerpts. We break each excerpt down carefully, focusing on rhythm, intonation, and stylistic accuracy expected by professional panels.

Scales and technical exercises are practiced with audition-level precision, not just general improvement in mind. Mock auditions are a regular part of our sessions, since performing behind a screen under pressure feels very different from a normal lesson. I also coach students on managing nerves, since composure often matters as much as raw skill in these settings.

Some students play excerpts beautifully at home but fall apart under the pressure of a real audition setting, so we simulate that pressure repeatedly until it feels familiar. Others need more work on the technical demands of specific excerpts, so we isolate and drill those passages precisely. Every audition has different demands, and I prepare students accordingly.
