From my experience in academia, I feel the importance of knowledge production is in the dialectic between students and teacher. I do not rely on a linear approach of the lecturer imparting knowledge to an assumed 'blank slate' (the student). Instead we create from the knowledge between us. I have worked as a practising artist, exhibited in several parts of the world, as well as being a researcher and classroom teacher/lecturer. This allows me insight into the line of work that students in the arts are preparing for in academia and in the wider artworld. I have supervised students at masters level who have graduated cum laude and gone on to become established art practitioners with a solid insight into contemporary theory. I am driven by the intellectual growth in the artists (students) and how the power of thinking critically and creatively can inform and open consciousness to deeper meaning and change, in a fast-paced society covered in glossy veneers and filters, promising instant gratification. With that said, contemporary culture and the energy of youth culture inspires my work. I have had the privilege to work internationally and continue to mentor some of my former students who have gone on to prestigious Universities such as La Sorbonne. I enjoy working with individuals as well as with large groups of people in collective projects such as art interventions, curating, symposiums, workshops and social justice activism. My academic skills are multidisciplinary. I am deeply committed and engaged with the curriculum to keep pace with contemporary global events in the art world, and for example how today's technology excavates new discoveries that change and challenge the way we understand the world and, more especially, how we navigate the world of representation. I am dedicated to hone the development of each individual's personal and professional progress and support cultivating their individual expression by identifying the strength of each.
