About Buddhika

I’m Buddhika, a Physics Teaching Assistant and a PhD student at the University of Manitoba. I help Winnipeg middle-school and high-school students strengthen their maths skills, understand their schoolwork, and become more confident working independently.

I have tutored since 2017. My experience includes Manitoba Essential Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, and Pre-Calculus, along with tutoring through Tutor Doctor and Sylvan Learning in Winnipeg. Before coming to Canada, I taught Advanced Level Physics in Sri Lanka and worked as a university teaching assistant.

Students can struggle with mathematics for different reasons. Some need to revisit fractions or basic algebra. Others understand a method but find it difficult to interpret word problems or decide how to begin. I take time to identify the difficulty and adjust my explanations and practice accordingly.

My physics research involves mathematical modelling, simulations, and data analysis. This gives me practical examples of how mathematics is used, which I adapt to the student’s age and course.

Students do not need to arrive feeling confident or knowing exactly what to ask. They are welcome to make mistakes, ask basic questions, and request another explanation. My goal is to help them build the skills to approach their schoolwork with increasing independence.

I offer individual tutoring in Pre-Calculus, Essential Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, and middle-school maths. Lessons help students strengthen their foundations, understand their schoolwork, and prepare for tests with greater confidence.

WHAT I CAN HELP WITH

Pre-Calculus:
Developing fluency in algebra, understanding functions and graphs, solving equations, and working through trigonometry. We address gaps in earlier skills and practise choosing appropriate methods for unfamiliar questions.

Essential Mathematics:
Building confidence with practical mathematics, including percentages, measurement, geometry, financial calculations, and interpreting information. We connect methods to everyday situations and the questions covered in school.

Applied Mathematics:
Understanding mathematical models, graphs, financial mathematics, and problem-solving in context. Where relevant, we practise using the technology required by the student’s course and interpreting the results.

Middle-school mathematics:
Strengthening fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios, basic algebra, geometry, and word-problem skills so students have a firmer foundation for high school.

HOW LESSONS WORK

Does your child follow examples in class but struggle to solve questions alone? Do they get stuck deciding where to start, or lose marks through recurring mistakes?

We begin with their current school topics and examples of work they find difficult. I check whether the obstacle is a new concept, an earlier skill, or the approach to solving the question.

A typical lesson includes:
• Reviewing the current difficulty and relevant foundational skills
• Clear explanations with worked examples
• Guided practice, with the student actively solving questions
• Independent questions to check understanding
• A recap of key ideas and what to practise next

Students are encouraged to ask questions and explain their thinking. When a method does not make sense, we approach it another way and adjust the pace.

HOMEWORK, TESTS, AND EXAM PREPARATION

Students can bring class notes, assignments, review sheets, and previous tests. We use these to address gaps, practise relevant questions, and develop clear, organized solutions.

I support students who are catching up, working towards stronger grades, or preparing for their next mathematics course. The goal is to build understanding and increasing independence.

WINNIPEG AND ONLINE LESSONS

Individual lessons are available online and in person in Winnipeg, subject to location and availability. Please include your neighbourhood when requesting a home visit.

FREE 30-MINUTE INTRODUCTORY SESSION

Bring a recent assignment, test, or a few difficult questions. We will discuss the student’s goals, work through a sample question, and identify a useful starting point. Parents are welcome to join the initial discussion.
