About Melissa

Hi! My name is Melissa and I'm a writer, composer, lyricist, and storyteller with over 20 years of experience working primarily in theater, film, and television. I have written hundreds of songs which are all licensed at Kobalt (a major music publishing company). I've released several albums and my musicals have been presented and workshopped in major off-Broadway and regional theaters in New York City and across the United States. In addition, I have won many awards for my music, including the Jonathan Larson Award, the ASCAP Harold Adamson Lyric Award, and the Vivace Award. I also know the ins and outs of the business, so I'm available to answer any questions you might have!

About the lesson

Are you interested in songwriting? Do you have a musical idea you want to work on? Or do you have a song that needs feedback?

I believe that everyone has a unique story to tell, so my goal is to encourage you to learn something new, find your voice, and hone your passion. As a teacher, I'm meticulous and organized. If you work with me, we will go over your goals and I will craft a plan for you to meet them at your own pace.

There are two types of lessons I can offer:

1. Skills-based lessons
This is for students who want to learn the craft of songwriting. Each lesson will be individually tailored based on what you need.

Lesson examples:
- Song structure
- Lyrics fundamentals and exercises
- Coming up with melody and hooks
- Learning Garageband

2. Project-based mentorship
This is for students who already have a project that needs feedback and guidance. These classes can be regular or one-off until the project is finished.

Class examples:
- Giving feedback on songs, story structure and character (if it is a musical)
- Workshopping lyrics
- Learning specific tools/software
- Practical, specific advice on next steps for your project

ALL lessons will be individually tailored to your needs.
