About James
My name is James Bartolacci. I specialise in teaching oil and acrylic painting, colour theory and colour mixing, portraiture, still life, figure and portraiture, and understanding materials. I'm a practising artist from the US working in oil painting and drawing, as well as a professor and educator of Fine Arts. I have my Masters of Fine Arts in Painting and Printmaking from the Yale School of Art at Yale University, and have exhibited my paintings in solo and group exhibitions in London, New York, and Los Angeles. In 2024, I was awarded the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant for Art, and my work has been published in books and reviewed by Frieze Magazine. I taught Light Colour and Design at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, and teach foundational art to secondary school students in London.

I strive to create a high-quality, inclusive learning environment where students feel supported in their artistic development through a balance of material knowledge, technical artistic skills, and critical inquiry. I help students understand the process of creating art from conceptualisation to execution, guiding them through every step from material choices, to creating and executing a final image. I have a deep familiarity with colour mixing, especially in creating the full spectrum of colour and skin tones. The time length of my lessons is flexible and can be adapted to your needs. Whether you are a beginner, primary or secondary school student, enrolled in university, or adult learner, I can guide you through your artistic goals.
