About Fintan
Hi, I’m Fintan. I’m a 3rd-year Mathematics student at Cardiff University/Adelaide University and an alumnus of Devonport High School for Boys. I specialize in helping Year 10/11 students get back on top before it's too late.
Many students fall into the trap of simply copying methods from a whiteboard without understanding the "why." My approach is different: I teach the language of mathematics holistically. Instead of memorizing steps, my students learn to actually make sense of the concepts.

I believe the best lessons are adaptive. We don't waste time on topics you’ve already mastered, allowing us to dive deep into the areas where you actually need help.
A typical session includes:
- Concept Gauging: We start by identifying your current understanding. I’ll provide a worked example or a diagnostic question to see exactly where the "block" is.
- Active Problem Solving: I strike a balance between guided support and giving you the space to work through problems independently. As I tell my students: productive struggle is exactly how we get better at maths.
- Digital Whiteboard: We use Google Meet and an interactive whiteboard app. Both of us can write on the board in real-time (I have a tablet and stylus for digital handwritten work), making the session feel like we're sitting at the same desk. (If you prefer pen and paper, that works perfectly too!)
Support Beyond the Lesson:
- Independent Study: At the end of our final lesson each week, I set 10–30 minutes of targeted practice questions to reinforce what we've learned.
- SMS Support: I don't believe learning should stop when the call ends. I offer between-lesson support via Whatsapp (group chat can be created with parent for safeguarding if preferred). If you get stuck on a problem, I can provide video explanations between lessons.
