About Shawn
I first took Latin as a high schooler, completely unaware of what to expect. I still remember translating my first sentences from Caesar's writings and realizing I was seeing the ancient world through his eyes. This was what he actually thought and said! It was magical, and that experience has inspired me to accompany students through their own journey of discovery with Latin. I have taught Latin at all levels for 20 years to students in middle and high school, as well as adult learners. I take joy in seeing students get the chance to connect with the ancient world through the eyes of those who lived it--the Romans themselves. Whether helping 5th graders get their first taste of Latin or guiding a high school student through the experience of translating beautiful Latin poetry, my job is to get to know you and support you on your journey with the language and culture of the ancient Romans.

My approach to teaching Latin is student-centered. I work with students to understand their learning goals and craft lessons to help them achieve those goals. Though I am very flexible in my methodology based on student needs, I typically use a reading-first approach with Cambridge, Oxford, and Ecce Romani curricula to help students build their proficiency in the language.
For intermediate students, I use transitional readers, often from the Legamus series, to support the transition to reading authentic Roman authors.
With advanced students, I offer a highly customizable approach providing reading experiences from a wide variety of genres and authors, such as Vergil, Cicero, Ovid, and medieval Latin texts, based on student interest.
