About Shannon

"I came to coach swimming and you became students. I came to teach students and they became future athletes for our nation." My passion lies in teaching students how to swim without fear and showing respect to the water. In my role as a coach, I've witnessed individuals of all ages, both adults and children, overcome initial fears of basic skills such as submerging their heads underwater to eventually witnessing them improving into proficient swimmers capable of covering long distances or even participating in competitions.

  • What age did you start playing sport? Tell us about this time or moment in your life.

I started swimming when I was around 7 years old. At the beginning, swimming was simply an activity that my family introduced me to, but over time, it became something I genuinely enjoyed and wanted to improve at.

I still remember the feeling of becoming more confident in the water while in the process of learning new strokes, improving my technique and eventually being able to swim distances that I couldn’t manage before. I think that early experience shaped the way I see sports today !

Eventually, swimming became much more than just a sport for me. It became a skill, a passion and something that I wanted to share with other people.
  • What are your favourite sports; those that you practice at a high level, a simple hobby, and a sport that you’d still like to discover?

Swimming is definitely my main sport and the one that I have dedicated most of my time and effort to. Today, I practise it professionally as a coach, and I continue to work on my own swimming and knowledge of the sport.

Outside of swimming, I enjoy cycling, badminton and going to the gym as hobbies. I like sports that keep me active and also allow me to have fun without always thinking about performance.

A sport I would really like to discover more seriously would be ice skating. I think the combination of legs movement, technique, strategy and mental strength would be a great challenge.
  • What gives you the motivation and passion to pursue your sport?

For me, the biggest motivation is seeing progress in myself and in other people.

As a coach, there is something incredibly rewarding about seeing a student who was initially afraid of the water eventually become comfortable and confident. It could be a child learning their first proper stroke, an adult overcoming their fear of swimming, or a student finally achieving a skill they’ve been working on for weeks.

Those moments remind me why I love swimming. I’m not only teaching someone how to swim, but I am also helping them gain confidence and a skill that they can carry with them for life.
  • Do you have a sporting achievement that you’re particularly proud of?

One achievement I’m particularly proud of is not necessarily a medal or competition result, but becoming a swimming coach and building my own swimming coaching business from the ground up.

I started with the desire to teach swimming, and over time I was able to develop my own teaching methods, work with students of different ages and abilities, and eventually build a team of coaches.

I’m especially proud that swimming has allowed me to help so many different people. From young children who are just starting out to adults and seniors who want to learn or improve.

Seeing students progress from their first lesson to becoming confident swimmers is an achievement that I value tremendously.
  • How have your achievements and challenges made you a better sportsperson?

My journey has taught me that patience and consistency are just as important as talent.

Every student learns differently. Some people pick up the technique quickly, while others need more time, different explanations or a completely different approach. Learning how to adapt has made me much more patient and observant as a coach.

I have also learned from challenges. There are lessons that don’t go according to plan, students who struggle with certain skills, and situations where progress can be slower than expected.

Instead of seeing these as failures, I see them as opportunities to understand what I can do differently. That mindset has made me a better swimmer, coach and educator.
  • If you had to go for a jog with a famous athlete, who would you choose? And what questions would you ask them?

    I do choose Michael Phelps.

I would not just want to ask him about his medals or records. I do be much more interested in understanding the mindset behind his success.

    I would ask him:

How did he stay motivated after achieving so much?
How did he deal with difficult periods in his career?
What did he do when he didn’t feel motivated to train?
How did he handle pressure before major competitions?
And what advice would he give to a young swimmer who wants to reach their full potential?

I think the most valuable lessons from elite athletes are not always about technique, they are about discipline, mindset, resilience and consistency.
  • How do you help people stay motivated?

I believe motivation comes from making progress visible and achievable.

Instead of asking a student to focus on a huge goal, I break it down into smaller milestones. For example, rather than saying, “You need to learn freestyle,” I might focus on body position first, then kicking, breathing, arm technique and eventually putting everything together.

I also try to celebrate small improvements ! Sometimes a student may not realise how much they have improved until you remind them where they started.

Most importantly, I try not to compare students with each other. Everyone has a different starting point and learning speed. I want my students to compete with their past selves, not with someone else.
  • What makes you a Superprof in sports?

I think what makes me a Superprof is that I do not see coaching as simply demonstrating an exercise and asking students to copy it.

I believe a good sports teacher needs to understand the person behind the student.

I have taught children, adults, seniors and people with very different levels of confidence and experience in the water. That has taught me to adapt my communication, teaching style and lesson structure according to each individual’s needs.

I am also very passionate about making swimming enjoyable. I want students to leave a lesson feeling that they have learned something, improved something and enjoyed the experience.

For me, being a Superprof means being more than an instructor. It means being someone who can guide, encourage, adapt and help students believe that they are capable of improving.

That’s what I try to bring to every swimming lesson.
