About Caitlin

I graduated from Johns Hopkins University (the Peabody Conservatory) with a Masters in Music in Violin and Viola Pedagogy. Since secondary school I have been involved in the folk music world in America and in Scotland through regular attendance of summer fiddle courses held at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig on the Isle of Skye. After graduation I took multiple courses on teaching violin to learn new ideas and taught many lessons in my former state of Virginia.

I started learning about emotional regulation when I started working as a music and movement instructor for nursery schools in 2019. Since then I have worked to incorporate mental health care and strategies into my teaching. I am passionate about guiding students in ways that will help them in all areas of life beyond music so I am committed to meeting each student where they are.

About the lesson

I believe that it is possible to master the difficult skills of playing the violin while also supporting a student's mental and emotional health. To that end, my lessons are highly individualistic and allow for exploring whatever genre sparks interest. I have a Masters in Music in Violin and Viola Pedagogy, with a special emphasis on teaching beginning students of all ages.

For beginning students, a strong foundation in technique is essential, as well as laying the groundwork for positive and effective practice. I use a mix of games, Suzuki method ideas and pieces, and ABRSM music to get started before branching out into genres that my students want to pursue. Lessons involve self regulation techniques so that students can learn to identify issues in their practice and develop strategies to overcome them.

Advanced students can also benefit from mental and emotional regulation to help them identify and overcome obstacles. I work to solve technical issues that keep students from wanting to play they way they dream about while also working to address mental blocks around performance and practice.
