  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I was born in Austria and brought up in Munich, Southern Germany, where I am from. I really enjoyed going to Gymnasium (grammar school) in Bavaria - I was taught by some of the most inspiring teachers! Being a language enthusiast, I have also done formal training at university and college in teaching German.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

"Wir schaffen das!" (We can do this!) is what Angela Merkel said in 2015 as German Chancellor when faced with a huge number of refugees coming into Germany. This very positive phrase still resonates with a lot of German people now. Angela Merkel, albeit controversial, has been a very important figure of public life in Germany.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behavior in the language that you particularly like?

German-speaking people have a fantastic etiquette of greeting each other, wishing each other well and shaking hands. You'll always hear: "Wie geht's?", "Schönen Abend!" or "Schönes Wochenende!". I often miss this conviviality when I'm abroad.
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Speaking German doesn't just give me the opportunity to retain my strong connection with family, friends and my home country; it also allows me to delve into a wealth of literature, film and music from several countries. Last but not least, it gives me the opportunity to demonstrate that, in many aspects, German isn't as difficult a language as people believe it to be.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

The main difficulties in learning German are the three genders, adjective endings and verb endings. Putting nouns into gender groups, and seeing and using patterns in adjective endings and verb endings, help immensely with memorisation.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

When I was learning Italian, having been thrown into the situation of living in Italy all of a sudden, I experienced all types of emotion, from frustration to excitement and pride. Learning a new language has so many faces. It teaches you to try your hardest all the time and to never give up.
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

My time in Poland teaching German to Polish teacher trainees has been the most eye-opening and rewarding experience of my teaching career. My students' enthusiasm was overwhelming and I learnt a lot about the German language and culture while living there.
  • What makes you a Superprof in language?

I have become more and more confident in all different aspects of teaching German over the years. Teaching at various universities in the UK, having been a Goethe examiner, being able to help students with their individual weaknesses and, lastly, having worked in German coursebook publishing have all taught me invaluable skills and helped me to develop my professionalism.
