About Gento

I’m originally from Japan and grew up in Tokyo, where I worked for more than 15 years in the entertainment industry—covering TV, film, and anime production. This experience gave me not only a deep connection to Japanese culture and daily life but also the ability to share unique insights that go beyond textbooks.

After moving to Birmingham in 2025, I decided to combine my love for Japanese pop culture and communication with teaching. I truly enjoy helping others discover the richness of the Japanese language while making the learning process engaging and approachable. I’m not just a teacher but also a conversation partner who understands both Japanese culture and the challenges of learning the language as a foreigner.

About the lesson

My lessons are designed to feel casual, enjoyable, and stress-free, while still giving you clear progress step by step. Classes are mainly conducted in Japanese, so you’ll naturally become more comfortable hearing and using the language from the very beginning.
Depending on your level and goals, we might practice everyday conversation, travel situations, or dive into specific interests like anime, films, and Japanese pop culture.
A typical lesson balances natural conversation practice with structured guidance:
Beginners will focus on building a strong foundation in speaking and listening, with plenty of encouragement and repetition.
Intermediate to advanced learners will work on improving fluency and confidence through real-life topics, cultural insights, and authentic materials.
Rather than rigid grammar drills, I emphasize interactive dialogue, cultural context, and practical expressions that you can use immediately. Think of our sessions as a friendly exchange where you can experiment with the language, make mistakes safely, and gradually grow more comfortable speaking Japanese.
