About Laura

I meld together practical application of mindfulness with intensive musicianship skills to bring you affective, job-earning tools—boosting your confidence, and becoming more heart centered in your practice. I pride myself not in my fancy graduate degrees, nor my experience and 500hr certification teaching ashtanga, but in my ability to cultivate powerful relationships with my students, and giving them the resources to build those relationships with their listeners.

I’ve had a severe passion for teaching since I was in high school. I tutored my peers, coaching them in theory, aural skills, piano and voice. I always thoroughly enjoyed listening to my peers sing while I played piano, and suggesting they try new or different choices, or celebrating a creative choice. My teacher in high school was brilliant, and spending sometimes up to 10 hours a week with him, he lit the fire to my love of teaching. In college I picked up my game, and began teaching a number of students, having them pay me for the first time. Through word of mouth, I became the go-to for coaching!

I have both my undergraduate and graduate degrees in vocal performance, and a second bachelors in French literature and history. I perform and record regularly, have ministered in various churches, and performed concert programs both jazz, musical theatre, and operatic. I’ve also 10+ years of experience playing clarinet and piano. On the more woo-woo side, I opened and ran a yoga studio called Spirit of Love yoga, where I taught ashtanga and yin, and gave sound baths. I am in the works of opening an institute where the worlds of yoga and music can dance together.

About the lesson

I like to find out what your goals are, holistically—even if music-making is not your planned “career”. From there, I will listen to your instrument, and based upon your playing or singing, how you engage, and what your goals are, I can create a road map that will best facilitate growth, and achieving your aspirations.

All ages! I’ve worked with students from 6-60! Some of the students were professional singers, aspiring to get hired for some gig, others young people looking to build repertoire, get help with audition skills, and or just build literacy!

Don’t look for someone who try’s to make you believe they have all the answers, and will cook up the perfect remedy for you. Find a teacher who is experienced, but more importantly, is invested in doing whatever it takes to facilitate your goals. Meet them, see how it feels, and be patient if things feel challenging—they should! Seeking out that fence where things are slightly “uneasy” is how we enter into vulnerability, giving space for transformation.

One of my favorite things about teaching is when students have a breakthrough. A student I was working with recently had been feeling quite challenged about this particular passage. I had her engage physically(I often implement physical activity) and the sound just poured out of her. Tears soon followed alongside a huge grin.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What am I trying to get out of this? What kind of teacher would I like? Does gender matter? I encourage my students to journal, briefly at the top of each session, just so they can check in with their goals for that day, and so that they can make the best of it. If they’d like to share, great, otherwise it’s really just for them!
