I sincerely believe that students should be supported in understanding complex material rather than rote learning which many institutions teach. My classes are conducted using an online whiteboard, Zoom and additional Slides & Notes (pdf) for professional courses will be provided to you. I will also provide a recording of each lesson. If you have any queries, please feel free to message me and I am happy to explain the process in more detail and answer any questions you may have. For this reason, I also offer my first lesson free. • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I have always been interested in Accounting & Finance since school and I was fortunate to have teachers who shared their interest with me. At University I began to see how corporate finance and financial accounting began to work together, which can tell the story of how a business has performed. I tutored after I finished University because I enjoyed the challenge of trying to explain difficult concepts as clearly as possible and helping my students understand something they had previously been struggling with.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

My subjects can be broadly divided into 3 topics Management Accounting, Financial Accounting & Finance. Surprisingly, it is not about the numbers! Management Accounting uses financial figures to inform planning & performance decisions, Financial Accounting is highly regulated, complex & provides similar information but in a different format for external users. Corporate finance then focuses on interpretating this data ensuring businesses raise the most suitable type of funding.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

My first Economics teacher. I remember having a class test and he was standing over me as I answered a difficult question, so I was a bit more nervous than usual. I must have got it right because he gave me a big pat on the back. It wouldn’t be allowed today (!!) but I remember how pleased he was that I had got it right. I feel the same way when I'm able to explain a concept to a student, which they had been struggling with. It’s not something I had anticipated, but you become invested in a student’s progress!
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Certainly, a combination of factors. I was never a brilliant, student so I can relate to finding some of the work difficult & I enjoy helping students understand it for the first time. You need to be patient & be prepared to explain the same topic in a different way. Tutors also need to have good listening & observational skills, so I can pace the tutorial accordingly & make sure that they understand what we are covering.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I don’t think any particular day was more important than another. The most valuable thing I have learned is that as my studies have progressed from school to University to post-graduate & professional programmes, my study & exam techniques have needed to evolve. This is why I always incorporate study & exam technique into my sessions rather than just teaching the material.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Accounting & Finance both use a lot of terminology so I’m constantly trying to think whether there is a clearer or more concise way to explain new, complex concepts. I also try to relate the theory to real world examples, which I feel, immediately makes it more interesting & easier to learn.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

Other than my family, my real passion is swimming. Unfortunately, I can't swim as much as I used to, but I still like to get into the water. Travel would be a very close second!

From a vocational perspective, I loved the intellectual challenge of working in Investment Banking. You certainly feel valued for your knowledge & diligence. You also have the opportunity to work with some brilliant people. It also enabled me to understand different types of financial products & financial analysis. Numbers never lie, so if you can learn to read financials, you can become an expert in any business.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P)?

I think a combination of things. You have to enjoy what you do & constantly look for ways to improve your tutoring skills. Also, I have completed the qualifications myself and have used my knowledge in the real world which certainly make it easier to teach & relatable for students. Most recently, I undertook teaching qualifications to help me best teach the material.
