About Luca
Hi! I am in the fifth year of pre-university education (vwo) in Alkmaar, and I have a passion for medicine. I came to the Netherlands a few years ago and have since adapted to the Dutch education system. In the meantime, I have completed the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) and am now in the dutch high school vwo system — which has given me a good understanding of how both systems work and how the same subjects are explained in different ways. English is my native language, and I also know very well what it's like to find your way in a new system and truly understand the material rather than just memorizing it. I try to incorporate that into my teaching style. I tutor English for vmbo, havo, and vwo students — as well as IB students, TTO students, or international students adapting to the Dutch system. Because I studied in various education systems myself — including IB and Dutch VWO — I have a broader perspective on subject matter than most students my age. I also use this in my lessons: instead of just following the textbook, I explain concepts from the ground up, so that you truly understand them and can build upon them yourself. We work on whatever you wish to cover — whether that is the material you want to review, taking practice exams, or extra practice material that I can provide. A lesson always starts with the issues you are struggling with. Together, we figure out exactly what parts you're having trouble with, and I ensure that you not only know the answer but also understand why — and how concepts or topics relate to one another. After that, we move on to practice: with exercises from your book, or with material from me on the same subject. I can help with consistent learning support for making progress in your school subjects or help you prepare for your school exams. For students simply looking to learn or improve their English, I also provide a step by step walkthrough of English grammar as well as general exercises for improving reading, writing and speaking skills. My approach is relaxed and personal — think of me more as a peer tutor than a traditional teacher. I adapt to your pace and needs, shifting the focus during the lesson towards more explanation or more practice, depending on what you need at that moment. A standard lesson lasts 60 minutes, but we can also do 90 minute or two hour long sessions.
