I have been teaching in Spain for over twenty years. I have had students that thought they could never get to speak English and just wanted to pass their exams in school but after a while, they ended up even wanting to study abroad!

I usually start checking how much they know grammar and their ability to communicate. A quick review while talking can be sufficient to know what level or in what point they are in learning the language. Some may need to reinforce it and some not too much. It all depends. After all these years, I have noticed that on the first contact, students have more confidence once they check on their grammar first ( talking about it ) then they feel more confident in expressing themselves in English. Classes mostly end up really very enjoyable as they progress positively towards success.
