• When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

  My interest in teaching began during secondary school, where I regularly helped my siblings and peers prepare for exams. I started part-time tutoring after secondary school, continued in tuition centres during my diploma, and later transitioned into private tutoring. This progression allowed me to refine my ability to simplify complex concepts and adapt to different learning needs effectively.

• Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

  I teach Mathematics, Mandarin, Bahasa Melayu, English, Science, Economics, and Business Studies. I particularly enjoy Mathematics and Economics due to their logical structure and real-world application, as well as language subjects that develop writing, comprehension, and communication skills. I focus on conceptual understanding and exam application rather than rote memorization, which I avoid unless absolutely necessary for exam requirements.

• Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

  Yes. I was strongly influenced by teachers who emphasised clarity, patience, and step-by-step thinking rather than memorization. One mathematics teacher in particular shaped my approach by consistently encouraging structured problem-solving. This has become the foundation of my own teaching methodology.

• What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

  An effective tutor requires clarity in explanation, patience, adaptability, and strong communication. More importantly, a tutor must be able to identify a student’s weak points quickly and rebuild their foundation systematically. A good tutor does not simply deliver content, but develops the student’s confidence, independence, and exam strategy.

• Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

  I have participated in mathematics olympiad-style competitions, which trained me to think beyond standard exam methods and develop stronger problem-solving strategies. I was also a top scorer in Bahasa Melayu, received recognition in a zon-level Mandarin knowledge competition, and achieved the highest score in Economics during my university studies. These experiences taught me that strong performance is not about memorization, but about clarity of understanding, structured thinking, and consistent application under pressure - principles I now apply in my tutoring.

• What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

  The most common challenge is helping students overcome fear of unfamiliar or higher-order questions, particularly in Mathematics and Economics. Many students understand concepts but struggle with application under exam conditions. My ongoing focus is refining methods to help students transition from formula-based learning to flexible, exam-ready thinking.

• Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

  My core passion is transforming student confidence and performance through clarity of understanding. I find it most rewarding when students shift from confusion to independence. Beyond subject knowledge, I am passionate about building strong academic foundations and effective exam strategies that deliver long-term results.

• What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P)?

  I combine strong academic ability across multiple subjects with structured tutoring experience from both tuition centres and private teaching. My approach is highly personalised, focusing on identifying learning gaps, rebuilding foundations, and guiding students step by step toward exam mastery and learning goals.
