About Matthew

I am a patient, friendly and flexible teacher. I have a TrinityCert TESOL Qualification and BA (Hons) degree in Applied Languages. As my student you will have my full attention and care. We will focus on communication and dialogue. My primary function as a teacher is to optimise language learning affordances by directing attention to the features of emergent language. We will tackle the challenges of grammar, vocabulary, expressions, accent and pronunciation as it emerges naturally through our conversation.

Both ONLINE and IN-PERSON classes!

I am based in North London (Golders Green) and I offer in-person classes either in a nice quiet cafe or at your preferred location. I like to make my students feel at ease and to create an environment where they are not afraid to make mistakes. I encourage my students to speak as much as possible and I give error corrections at the appropriate time. I always strive to adjust myself to my students and make sure they can understand me. Speaking is the most exciting and rewarding part of language learning, and you will start to see quick results! How do you get past the "intermediate trap" and progress to fluency? I believe that the most important stimulus for learning is curiosity. Find something that you absolutely love learning about and could talk about for hours. My qualifications include a BA (Hons) in Applied Languages and Linguistics and a Trinity College CertTESOL. What will we do in our lessons? All the material will be given to you each lesson in PDF files, images or Google Slides. In our lessons you will... Speak a lot Improve your grammar Get error corrections Use Graded Readers to see authentic and very useful examples of new language I will offer you more natural ways to say things or express your thoughts Read about and discuss the latest topics and current affairs (For example: BBC Future and BBC Reel are excellent resources that many of my students enjoy) Learn new vocabulary and grammar as it emerges naturally in our conversation I can send you exercises and texts for you to work on before and after the lesson, in order to enhance your learning Discover new phrasal verbs, idioms, collocations Finally understand the differences between commonly confused words Improve your tenses I generally have two types of classes: In my Conversation Practice we'll have an informal and spontaneous conversation but we'll also use interesting material!: Beautiful English poetry, interesting blog articles, short documentaries, motivational videos, song lyrics. In my Grammar and Vocabulary class I use various material from course books (English File Series, National Geographic Outcomes Series, grammar books (English Grammar in Use - Raymond Murphy) and I have also created my own Google Slides to explain grammar points and verb tenses. As a teacher I am patient, kind and caring. I am easy going and I understand you're a busy person, so I won't mind if you need to change the lesson times/dates or cancel at short notice.
