Through my experience in teaching elementary, high school, and adult classes I've developed techniques for using a variety of strategies and all modalities to ensure that my students will be able to learn according to their individual combination of learning styles, as well as feeling safe and respected. Respect is modeled and expected. My approaches are gauged to accommodate the full range of learning needs, from those with disabilities to the gifted. While I maintain high expectations, at the same time I'm aware of the signs of frustration, keeping their strengths and needs in mind. I always strive to communicate my love of my subjects, especially through lively discussions where all ideas are accepted, and hand-on projects which promote not only long-term recall and confidence but the fun of learning as well. For assessments I prefer to use informal, daily observation together with written forms, mindful that not all students are able to communicate their new knowledge best on paper. I have found that clear, on-going correspondence with the parents regarding progress on our goals and objectives, prevents misunderstandings, allowing them to participate in their child's education at a comfortable level. This is the formula that I have discovered works beautifully, based on feedback from parents, students, and administrators.
