About Andrew

It is too easy, when teaching an instrument, to fall into a routine of assigning and playing exercises without talking about WHY the student should play a certain thing. I always emphasize the "why" as much as the "how" and I always focus on the most important aspects of the instrument: creativity, expression, and fun. I've been giving private drum lessons for over 20 years and have worked with several hundreds of students of all ages, backgrounds, and musical interests. In addition to drums, I also teach world percussion (bodhran, tapan, doumbek, djembe, bongo, cajon, and more) as well as music production with Ableton Live. I teach music production courses at both American University and George Washington University and offer the same instruction in the form of private lessons (for a small fraction the cost of a college course!). The first step is to always identify the student's goals. No two students are the same and there is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all approach to teaching! I have taught students of all ages (from 6 to 86) and skill levels (total beginners to seasoned, gigging drummers) on the drums, percussion, and music production.

In all lessons, I always aim to balance the technical and creative, left brain and right brain, with a balance of mechanics/technique and music-making. The exact balance between these two areas depends on the student's level and interests, but both halves are always present.

I offer lessons from my home studio, which features multiple drum sets, a wide range of percussion, and recording equipment. Besides teaching recording and music production, I am also able to record students on the drums and share those recordings.

My rates are $45 per 30-minute lesson or $55 per 45-minute lesson.
