About Teresa

Teresa Owen, E-RYT200, YCEP, C-IAYT, founded Inner Smile Yoga in 2005, to fill a void for those students intimidated or fearful of the growing large studio and fast-paced yoga scene. She is certified in yoga, yoga therapy and as a continuing education provider. She offers both public and private classes, workshops, and retreats in Marin County and Atlanta, Georgia, her current home. One-on-one therapeutic specialties include the nervous system, pelvic floor, asthma/respiratory conditions, hormonal/energy imbalances and a wide variety of orthopedic applications.

She has been studying yoga since 1997. Her primary influences include Tias Little, Aadil Palkhivala, and Mark Horner. She is trained in the Iyengar style with an eclectic mix of intensive work with Forrest Yoga, Vini, and Shadow Yoga. She received her Yoga Therapy certification in 2004.

Teresa’s approach reflects her experience as a longtime competitive athlete, healthcare advocate, event and group facilitator, wife and mother of two young adults. She weaves together her life experience, love of yoga and spiritual exploration, with an eye toward keeping her classes both accessible and challenging.

Skilled in tracking the movement and grounding of energy, she is a Reiki Master and continues to expand her training in other forms of subtle-body healing. She is currently a dedicated student of Shadow Yoga.

I started practicing yoga as way to balance my competitive swimming and fell in love with the breadth and depth of the practice. It supported me through several life transitions, and provided a pathway for both understanding and compassion for myself and others.

I have been studying yoga since 1997 and teaching since 2004. I am certified as with Yoga Alliance as an E-RYT 200 and YACEP. My experience includes work with a variety of populations, including orhopedic injuries and rehab; nervous system issues such as parkinson's, epilepsy, and dystonia; depression and anxiety; brain injury; and schizophrenia. I am a lifelong learner and am also a certified yoga therapist, C-IAYT.

About the lesson

Typically, I spend a few moments by phone with new students to assess if we are a good fit. If so, I schedule a 75 minute session that includes intake, a customized yoga sequence addressing the student's indivdual needs, and often a video or notes from the session. I like to encourage students to develop a daily routine, in a way that works with their schedule, and then we will schedule either one-three more sessions to adjust/change things if needed. Often at this point they can be directed to join a small group class or we can schedule a check in for 3-4 months later. Some students choose to commit to a once/weekly daily session and that works better for them.
