About Robin

My musical background

I studied violin from the age of six, first learning through the Suzuki method, before working my way through the ABRSM grades through to Grade 8. I then went on to study my Music BA at The School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. Here I studied Klezmer violin with Ilana Cravitz for my final recital.
As a performer I play regularly throughout the UK and Europe including with Leeds bands Kibitz (Klezmer) and Lonan (Yorkshire folk), as well as Lisbon-based Mediterranean folk band, Malotira.

What makes my violin teaching unique?
With over ten years of experience offering private violin teaching and teaching in schools, I offer a lot more than just a traditional classical route (ABRSM/Trinity Grades). Although coming from a classical background, I am well versed in many folk traditions including Klezmer, Balkan and Celtic folk and I can also offer students an avenue into more improvised styles of music such as gypsy jazz and swing.

As well as providing students with a strong foundation in reading music notation, music theory and good technique, I also value the importance of learning by ear, and how to apply these skills to ensemble settings such as playing in bands or joining in at jam/community music nights. These are essential music-making skills which often classical violinists struggle with, and I love to help students unlock these skills!

My values as a music teacher
I believe one of the most important aspects of music teaching is to make the approach as accessible to the learner as possible - through adapting to the students interest and strengths, as well as showing an accommodating and creative approach in overcoming any potential barriers to learning.

In my 10 years of teaching I have enjoyed teaching students with dementia, adults with visual impairments and autistic children. I believe music learning should be accessible to everyone and with the right approach, everyone can learn to enjoy being musical!

What do I offer as a guitar teacher?

As an acoustic guitar teacher I can offer a strong foundation in pop/acoustic and folk playing, particularly focussing on right-hand finger picking skills, as well as exploring alternative tunings such as DADGAD, and singing whilst playing guitar.

I have a 24 hour cancellation policy. If the student needs to cancel a lesson and does not give 24 hour notice they are still liable for the full hourly rate
