About Rupert

For two decades, I have taught screenwriting at all levels, from Year 6 to MA; and in a variety of settings, from evening classes to film school, including Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London Screen Academy and the London Film School where I currently teach on the MA course. As a screenwriter, I have worked in all areas of the industry and my award-winning work has featured on BBC, Channel 4 and Netflix, and in many international film festivals, including Chicago, Edinburgh, London and Sundance Film Festival. In a previous life, I directed many pop videos for artists as various as Bob Dylan, Sophie Ellis-Bextor and The Streets.

About the lesson

After quite a few years as a lecturer and screenwriter, I have found it to be a messier, less scientific process than the books would have you believe. There is no one approach to writing. While I have a healthy regard for theory in its place, I believe what's most important is to build trust in the uncertainty of the process and to find your own way of doing things, however much that might vary from project to project. Writing can also feel like a very isolating process. At whichever stage of your project you find yourself, I'd like to help you find your way forward. If you're just starting out with half an idea; or trying to figure out the shape of your structure; or about to embark on a second draft... these are all the kinds of challenges I most enjoy teaching. In our initial meeting, we will clarify what you'd most like to achieve, then agree on how many sessions feels right and the deadlines that might best help to incentivise your writing.

Perfect! I have been working with Rupert for around 4 months and he has helped me develop my ability to write very quickly.
