About Joanna

My teaching journey began in 1982 at just 13 years old when I taught my very first piano lessons. What started as a childhood passion blossomed into a lifelong career. September 2026 marks my 45th year of dedicated music teaching.

I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education with honours (BA, hons) from West Liberty University in West Virginia, USA. My career spans over four decades of classroom and private tuition across both the US and UK school systems. Having also served as the local Bristol representative for ABRSM (managing both practical and theory exam centres), I bring deep, behind-the-scenes insight into exam board standards. This expertise translates directly to student success: 88% of my private candidates achieve a Merit or Distinction on their ABRSM exams, with multiple theory students earning 100% perfect scores.

As a Premier Publisher on Boom Learning, I create world-leading interactive digital music theory resources. I teach because I am passionate about helping every student—especially neurodivergent learners—build deep musical literacy, technical confidence, and a lifelong love for the piano.

With over 45 years of teaching experience and a BA (Hons) in Music Education, I provide high-quality, structured online piano and music theory lessons tailored to beginner through advanced students, ages 6 and up. I have a special 12-week programme for 4-6 year olds called, "Primer Keyboard" that is for a parent and child together.

As an AuDHD specialist, my teaching methodology focuses on clear, sequential mastery and executive function support, ensuring neurodivergent learners thrive without overwhelm.

Lessons are conducted weekly during school term times, with either 30-minute or 1-hour sessions (depending upon the student's focus capacity) designed to build deep conceptual understanding, technical precision, and exam confidence—particularly across ABRSM syllabi. Although students are NOT required to pursue official exams, all students will gain practical knowledge and technical skills at the piano and learn musical literacy from the very first lesson.

Instruction is enriched with custom-designed, interactive digital learning tools, including Boom Cards (self-correcting online flash cards for piano geography and music theory) and multimedia resources, including bespoke audio file tutorials and YouTube demonstrations of performance for each piece and skill that they study.

Before regular tuition begins, parents of all prospective school-aged students or adult students complete an initial onboarding inquiry to accurately map out learning goals, pace, and individual support needs.
