Sketch Your Dreams in Subang Jaya
Drawing is creating a picture using various tools like pencils, pens, chalk, markers, crayons, or other mediums, excluding paint. It involves the act of producing such an image.
Artists express themselves through various factors that influence their work, including their skills, technology, access materials, stylistic preferences, intended audience, creative briefs, cultural background, personal interests, and more.
The quality of your creative work is significantly influenced by the amount of time you dedicate to your drawings. Consider distinguishing between a quick one-minute sketch and a more detailed one-hour drawing. When exploring an art gallery, we can identify the pieces that captivate us and present a challenge. These artworks or designs tend to hold our gaze for the longest duration.
While we may not necessarily prefer them, certain artworks can capture our attention and stimulate our thoughts. One notable artist in the drawing community who has made significant contributions to the art world is Ernest Howard Shepard.
Shepard's Simple and Happy Works of Art
Ernest Howard Shepard is widely recognised as one of the most renowned illustrators in history. His association with the beloved tales of Winnie the Pooh is just as significant as that of A. A. Milne or Christopher Robin. Shepard was the first illustrator to give life to Pooh in Milne's poems and remained closely involved with the bear throughout all subsequent publications.
Ernest Howard Shepard, born in 1879, had a deep passion for drawing from an early age. Despite attending St Paul's School as a child, his artistic talent and love for drawing led him to pursue formal education at Heatherley's School of Fine Arts. His exceptional skills earned him a scholarship to the prestigious Royal Academy Schools. During World War I, Shepard enlisted in the military and shared humorous sketches and jokes from the battlefield with Punch magazine.
After his return, Shepard was given a staff position where he could meet Milne. He contributed to Punch for over 50 years, with 33 years as a staff member. Even after leaving Punch, Shepard continued working well into his 90s. He notably worked on the Pooh books and was an illustrator in various other projects. In his 80s, Shepard even authored two books titled "Ben and Brook" and "Betsy and Joe."
Ernest Howard Shepard's artworks are characterised by their simplicity, joyfulness, and undeniable charm, which align perfectly with what one would expect from a beloved childhood illustrator. He would initially sketch his drawings in pencil before finalising them with ink, thus immortalising his creations.
At the age of 90, Shepard generously gifted 300 initial sketches for the Pooh drawings to the Victoria and Albert Museum. These sketches were publicly displayed in 1969 and travelled to various exhibitions worldwide. They have now been compiled and published as The Pooh Sketch Book.
Ernest Howard Shepard passed away in 1976, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of Winnie the Pooh. Like Milne, Shepard's legacy lives on through his iconic illustrations of Pooh and his collaborations with Grahame's books.
