Unleash Your Inner Artist in Seberang Perai
Drawing is a form of artistic expression where images are created on a surface, typically paper, using various materials like ink, graphite, chalk, charcoal, or crayon. It involves capturing the resemblance of objects from the physical world and representing ideas, emotions, and abstract concepts through visual forms, symbols, and even imaginative creations.
However, this definition can be applied to all graphic arts and techniques focusing on shape and form rather than mass and colour as painting does. The direct connection between the artist's efforts and the final result sets drawing apart from graphic printing processes. In other words, drawing is created through a continuous and direct application of artistic skill onto the chosen surface. While a drawing can serve as a basis for reproduction or copying, it remains unique and special in its own right.
One artist who is unique in his own right is Hiroyuki Doi, a talented self-taught artist. Let’s get to know him together.
Exploring the Intersection of Eastern and Western Art with Hiroyuki Doi
Born in Nagoya in 1946, Doi had a deep passion for gastronomy, art, and culture. He ventured to Tokyo, where he honed his cooking abilities and pursued his dream of becoming a chef. To gather more knowledge and inspiration, he even used his savings to embark on enlightening trips to Europe.
In 1980, he decided to pursue a career in art after the unfortunate passing of his younger brother. This tragic event profoundly impacted him, leading him to shift his focus from being a chef to creating visual art. However, it wasn't until 2001 that his artwork gained recognition in the Western art scene when it was exhibited at the Phyllis Kind Gallery in New York. Since then, he has garnered significant attention from art critics.
Doi skillfully blends the artistic customs of Asia and the West, drawing inspiration from the Sino-Japanese ink painting tradition (zhe/dunjinga) that gained popularity during the Edo period and beyond. He is well-versed in the Outsider and Self-Taught art movements in the Western world and the groundbreaking art pioneered by Atsuko Tanaka and other post-war gutai movement artists in Japan. In more recent times, Doi's accomplishments can be likened to those of the renowned conceptual artist Yayoi Kusama. The artist derives inspiration and artistic lineage from the esteemed draftsmen of Japan's history, such as Nagasawa Rosetsu and Katsushika Hokusai, among others. Employing a traditional Japanese ink pen with archival properties, the artist meticulously crafts intricate artworks of countless tiny circles.
These circles organically grow and intertwine, resulting in complex compositions that reflect a profound fascination with the interconnectedness of the smallest components and the greater whole. From cellular biology to the vast expanse of the cosmos, the artist's creations embody a spiritual contemplation of this relationship.
Doi's artwork has been showcased extensively and has found its place in various public and private collections worldwide. Notably, his work was featured at the Thomas Williams Gallery in London in 2009 and at The Museum of Everything in both 2009 and 2010. Additionally, Doi had the honour of a significant retrospective at the Pilot Pen Station Museum in Tokyo in 2013.
