About James

Music is making music - playing, singing, writing, listening. Theory is the foundation that supports all your music making.

My own learning has spanned two decades of formal and informal training across classical, jazz and pop styles, including a degree in Music from the University of Manchester, where I achieved 1st class honours focusing on composition, performance and hip hop.

I have also trained as a secondary school teacher with placements in state and comprehensive, higher and lower attaining pupils with diverse needs and backgrounds.

It has been my pleasure to learn to teach each individual that's come into my classroom, sharing the joy of discovering new music and having a go at making it.

The same applies to you, and every student of mine.

There's a whole world of music out there to explore. You tell me where you want to go, and I'll draw up a map.

About the lesson

What do I mean by theory? Well, firstly, anything that isn't practical. Secondly, it's up to you.

Need help understanding how to read music? Awesome. Understanding harmony? Perfect. Aural skills (listening, intervals, pitch)? Don't forget your ears. Exploring a particularly niche area you're interested in? Try me.

Whether you're a hard-working teenager who needs help with notation and wants to know how to write a funk track.

Or an A Level student who wants some back up on that tricky set work you're studying.

Or a curious post-schooler with an interest in the socio-political landscape of hip hop in the early 1990s.

I will build our lessons around what you need. 1 hour at a time. So, that's where our conversation starts...
