About Alejandro

I have a master's in music theory from McGill University, a bachelor's degree in music pedagogy, and another master's in music as a general subject. I have a long experience as a music theory, sight-singing, ear training, and piano teacher. This background has made me discover how interesting each individual is in their own learning process. Thus, my training as a pedagogue, pianist, and theorist has been strengthened by the encounter with my students' curiosity and musical passion. I recognize the enormous responsibility of cultivating and maintaining motivation in my students.

About the lesson

Do not study music theory away from the music itself. Harmony and counterpoint are approached through the music itself, singing and playing each exercise performed to understand a concepts like secondary dominant or leading tone. In my lessons, music theory is not studied on paper, but through singing and composing small fragments that are played immediately. It is not simply a list of theoretical rules to be memorized, but a set of principles that are understood in practice.
Two activities are fundamental in the learning of music theory: analysis and composition. These two activities are carried out during my classes with a diverse repertoire that includes pieces from the common practice period (classical music), traditional music, and popular music. Thus, my class adapts to the needs and age of the student, from school-aged children to university students who need to reinforce their theoretical knowledge for their professional musical studies.
