About Sona
I'm a native Turkish speaker with a truly international life, I completed my bachelor's in Türkiye, my master's in Finland, and I'm currently a PhD student in Portugal. During my education years I had 4 Erasmus periods, so altogether, I've lived in 7 different countries so far, with an 8th coming up for an Erasmus exchange next academic year. Constantly adapting to new cultures and picking up the essentials of new languages has become second nature to me, and it's exactly what helps me understand what foreigners find hardest when learning Turkish. Turkish and English are both part of my everyday life, so switching between the two while teaching feels completely natural.
I've been giving lessons (Turkish and drawing) to children from all over the world since my bachelor's degree (to make extra money), so teaching has been a steady part of my life for years, not something new. I know how to keep students engaged and motivated, making sure lessons never feel like a chore or an obligation, but something you actually look forward to. I bring the same discipline, patience, and structured thinking from my academic background, but always wrapped in a friendly, encouraging atmosphere where you feel comfortable making mistakes and asking questions.
Outside of academics, I'm a curious, creative, and positive person, I love drawing, illustrating, working with clay, and playing piano (pretty much any art form, except contemporary, that one's just not for me!). I'm also in love with literature, I read 40 books a year for as long as I can remember, so we might just share a favorite. I used to watch Turkish dramas religiously, though these days my PhD research keeps me busier than I'd like.
I bring curiosity, real cross-cultural experience, and genuine enthusiasm to every lesson, and I love helping people discover the language and culture I grew up with.
