About Scorpio

Bio & Philosophy 2023
Professor Scorpio J. Welch

Ms. Scorpio J. Welch was born in Miami Beach, Florida, and formally educated in the Miami Dade County Public school system as an honor student. She is the youngest of five children. Her parents were Rev. Prince Albert Swain and Sis. Frances Swain pastors of New Mt. Zion Baptist Church and co-founder of the South Florida Freewill Baptist Conference Incorporated in 1969. Professor Welch has four older brothers, one of which is Dr. Jeffrey Dean Swain, Dean of Religion at Florida Memorial College and a graduate of Morehouse College and University of Miami Law School. Professor Welch is the mother of Brittany (age 31 an Army Sergeant) and Dominique (age 33). Both of these young women have earned a masters degrees at Florida Gulf Coast University in Public Health and Public Administration.

After being accepted to the prestigious Spelman College of Atlanta she earned an undergraduate degree in English. Professor Welch is active in the Spelman Student Government and Glee Club. Ms. Welch attended Nova Southeastern University where she earned a Master of Science degree in English Education. Professor Welch is 10 months away from earning another doctoral degree in Organizational Leadership. Ms. Welch espouses the idea that the purpose of education is to create free thinkers. She believes that interaction with the written text using modern technology is critical in academia in order for students to become successful global learners and citizens. Community-based learning is a concept that maximizes the learning capacity of each student in a higher education classroom because all of the stakeholders are involved. Basically, everyone in the college has a vested interest in each student as a client and as a future citizen of a global society. Today our students come from varied cultures and environments and they come with a wealth of knowledge and expertise in certain areas. The community at large and the higher education institution can benefit greatly from developing programs and courses that interconnect the talents of students and their faculty to the needs of the community. Giving students hands-on experience as they learn area content or giving them a chance to participate in service-learning makes them competitive as they graduate and enter the global workforce. I suppose that the precept of intellectual integrity and academic veracity should be a compass to guide students and professors in the classroom. A classroom is a place for personal development that benefits the individual as well as our community. Conversations on culture, language, self-pride, and embracing the teaching of English as a second language to those who may have come from other countries are vital to the success of every student in the course.

Diversity matters and teaching it through the lessons across disciplines is a key principle that I embrace as an educator which is an extension of centered learning. Student-centered teaching methods shift the focus of activity from the teacher to the learners. These methods include active learning, in which students solve problems, answer questions, formulate questions of their own, discuss, explain, debate, or brainstorm during class; cooperative learning, in which students work in teams on problems and projects under conditions that assure both positive interdependence and individual accountability; and inductive teaching and learning. The purpose of student-centered education is to create free thinkers who are not restricted by assertive philosophies of how one's own life and community should be organized. Student-centered curriculum as well as the practice of some traditional means to achieve maximum success in higher education.
