About Ronda

I have spent most of my life in other countries outside of the U. S. My parents took me to England about the time I began school and my early years were spent in English schools. After that, I went to an American embassy school in Morocco with kids from all over the world and studied French. In high school, I was in America, and I studied Spanish at school and got the award in Spanish for the highest grade. I also got awards for having the highest grades in English, Psychology, and History. When I was a university student, I went to an American university, but was sent for two semesters to study in Japan as an exchange student. I had learned to speak French and Spanish, and then I added Japanese. I was the only student my university sent that learned to speak Japanese. I got a 4.0 both semesters in Japan. I went to graduate school in Texas, and I graduated Suma Cum Laude. I spent a lot of time speaking Spanish in Texas. I taught 8 years at Lucian Blaga University in Sibiu, Romania and was the head translator for the medical clinic there. After that, I taught in America for a couple of years, and the other American professors always called on me to translate for them with the international students. Even if I didn't speak their language, the international students understood me better than their American professors. After that, I taught a year in Japan at a language school, then I went to Texas. I had taught Japanese and Spanish besides English at the universities, and in Texas, I taught Spanish and ESL. Next, I went to S. Korea where I learned to speak Korean and taught lots and lots of Koreans to speak English.

I specialize in older students. I have taught all kinds of ESL classes. I have taught vocabulary classes, pronunciation classes, speech classes, beginning English for adults, grmmar classes, and English for special purposes. In English for special purposes, I taught people becoming doctors and nurses, people going into business or food processing, librarians, girls studying to be nuns, etc. I taught them unique vocabulary, phrases, and grammar they needed in their professions. I can speak Spanish, Romanian, Korean, and Japanese, so if I get the students who can't speak any English at all, I can make a bridge for them easily. That was part of my job at the university in Korea because the other English teachers couldn't speak Korean. The students felt good because I could explain grammar in Korean, and then teach them to speak using that grammar. A typical lesson plan for these beginning students: I wrote on the board: "I go to the door," and them I went to the door. At the door, I said, "I am at the door." Next, I said, "I am going to the blackboard," and I went back to the blackboard. Next, I said to a student, "Go to the door," and they went to the door. I asekd, "Where are you?," and the student said, "I am at the door." Next, I said, "Go to your chair, and I pointed to their chair," and they went. I just kept adding questions and answers and let several students try. With everything, I wrote it on the board, so they could register it easier. I began with a student who spoke better than the others, and the others learned by watching and listening to the student who knew English a bit better than they did. I taught them verb tenses like this. When I would say, "Go to the door," and they got up to go to the door, I asked while they were walking, "Where are you going?" They would say, "I am going to the door." When they arrived, I asked them again where they were, and they answered. After they were back at their seat, I asked, "Where did you go?"--After I modeled it for them, and they anwered, "I went to the door." I also taught modals like this. I would ask, "Do you want to go to the door?" By this time, they were enjoying the game and would say, "Yes, I want to go to the door." At the door, often, I told them to open the door, and then go outside. They were having a good time because when they were outside, I asked, "Where are you?," and they had to answer, "I am outside." After that, I asked, "Do you want to come in?," and the answer was always, "Yes, I want to come in," and I would give them permission to come in. I also did it with their chairs by saying, "Stand up," then I would ask if they wanted to sit down, and they would say, "Yes, I want to sit down," and I gave them permission to sit. --- At other times, I would take a book and put a pen on top of it. I would say, "The pen is on the book," then I would ask, "Where is the pen?" They would answer, "The pen is on the book," then I put the pen under the book, in the book next to the book, over the book, etc., and taught them prepositions. When I taught children, I used a stuffed animal and put it around the room having the answer questions about the stuffed animals, but I specialized in adults. We also played games with the vocabulary, and I taught several vocabulary classes. I put them in teams and let them draw a word and then play charades or "win, lose, or draw," and they learned the vocabulary and had fun. I invented a verb game that used the most used verbs. I still have the cards because copies were made and sold because everyone liked the game. The game teaches them verb tenses starting from the easiest tenses, going on to modals and harder verb tenses. It goes up in levels, and on the last level, they were using the verb to make specific types of sentences like "reported speech," "if/then statements," sentences with "when clauses," "relative clauses," etc. I taught Korean this past year and used the game only in Korean, and the students loved it and learned to carry on simple conversations in Korean. I initially invented it for my ESL students. I also taught a lot of essay writing classes. There are a couple of things different about me. I can also teach the other languages I speak and have at the university. I have taught ESL and Engish for native speakers.
