About Matthew
I have always been interested in how law operates in practice and how it shapes people's lives. This has informed both my academic research and my approach to teaching.
I believe that good teaching is about more than simply explaining the law. It is about encouraging students to think critically, question assumptions, develop their own arguments and become confident, independent learners.
My approach is collaborative, supportive and engaging. I encourage discussion, welcome questions and believe that making mistakes is an important part of learning. I also recognise that everyone learns differently, and that effective teaching requires flexibility, patience and an understanding of individual needs.
Having worked in both academia and legal practice, I aim to make law accessible, relevant and intellectually stimulating. I enjoy challenging students to think beyond textbooks and consider how legal principles operate in the real world.
Above all, I genuinely enjoy teaching. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing students develop their confidence, discover their abilities and achieve things they initially thought were beyond them.

Experienced University Lecturer, Barrister and Legal Education Specialist
*All lessons are delivered exclusively online to ensure that my tuition is accessible to students wherever they are, regardless of their location or individual circumstances.*
I am a Senior Lecturer in Law, qualified (non-practising) barrister, PhD-qualified researcher and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), with over a decade of experience in legal education, academic research and professional legal practice.
Throughout my academic career, I have designed and developed law degree programmes, written undergraduate and postgraduate law courses, created examinations and assessments, and marked and moderated thousands of pieces of student work. I have also supported hundreds of students throughout their legal education, from undergraduate study to postgraduate research and professional qualifications.
This experience means that I understand not only the law itself, but also how universities teach it, how examinations are designed, what examiners are looking for and how students can achieve the best possible results.
I bring this knowledge and experience to every lesson, helping students develop their understanding, improve their academic performance and approach their studies with greater confidence.
A Personalised Approach to Learning
I believe that everyone can succeed in studying law with the right teaching, guidance and support. My approach is straightforward: lessons should be tailored to you, rather than expecting you to adapt to a particular way of teaching.
I offer friendly, supportive and personalised tuition at all levels, including GCSE, A-Level, LLB, LLM, PhD and professional legal qualifications, including the SQE and Bar Training Course (BTC).
Every lesson is designed around your individual needs, your school or university, your particular syllabus and your examination or assessment requirements.
Whether you are struggling with a particular topic, preparing for an examination, hoping to improve your grades or simply looking to develop your confidence, we can work together to identify what you need and how best to achieve it.
Inclusive Teaching and Neurodiversity
As a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), I have specialist expertise in the pedagogy of legal education, including teaching methods, curriculum development, assessment and inclusive learning.
I am particularly committed to supporting students with disabilities, specific learning difficulties and neurodivergent conditions, including ADHD, autism and dyslexia.
I recognise that everyone learns differently, and I am experienced in adapting the pace, structure, materials and delivery of lessons to accommodate your individual needs.
There is no expectation that you should learn in a particular way. We can work together to find an approach that suits you.
Legal Subjects and Research Specialisms
I have taught extensively across the core areas of English law, including Contract, Tort, Criminal Law, Public Law, Equity and Trusts, Family Law and the English Legal System.
I also have substantial experience teaching professional legal subjects, legal research methods, legal writing and advanced legal analysis.
My research specialisms include Medical Law, Healthcare Law, Bioethics, Mental Capacity, Informed Consent, Organ Donation and Socio-Legal Studies.
Alongside my academic work, I have experience in legal practice, including family and care proceedings, financial crime and litigation support. This allows me to bring practical examples into my teaching and help students understand how legal principles operate beyond the classroom.
Examination Preparation, SQE and BTC Support
Having designed university examinations, written hundreds of multiple-choice questions (MCQs), and marked and moderated thousands of assessments, I have extensive experience of how legal knowledge is examined.
I can help you develop effective approaches to essay writing, problem questions, critical analysis, examination technique and understanding assessment criteria. Whether you are preparing for an examination or working towards a coursework deadline, our lessons can focus on the particular skills and knowledge you need to develop.
I have supported multiple students preparing for the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) and can provide targeted assistance with substantive legal knowledge, MCQ technique, revision strategies and examination preparation.
I also completed the Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC) at City Law School and have subsequently supported students who have successfully secured pupillage and qualified as barristers.
Drawing on my own professional training and teaching experience, I can provide support to students undertaking the Bar Training Course (BTC), including legal analysis, advocacy preparation, professional legal skills and examination technique.
Dissertation, Thesis and Research Support
I have extensive experience supervising and supporting LLB, LLM and PhD students, helping them develop their research, strengthen their arguments and complete substantial pieces of academic work.
I offer individual academic supervision support, research guidance, feedback on structure and argument, and proofreading and copy-editing services for LLB dissertations, LLM dissertations and PhD theses.
Whether you are at the beginning of your research or approaching submission, I can help with developing research questions, organising chapters, strengthening legal analysis, improving academic writing and ensuring clarity and consistency throughout your work.
My aim is to support you in developing your own ideas and producing the strongest work you can, while respecting your institution's academic integrity requirements.
I will also take the time to familiarise myself with your particular university's requirements and assessment criteria, so that the support I provide is relevant to your course and the work you are undertaking.
What You Can Expect from My Lessons
My lessons are intended to be friendly, engaging and academically rigorous, without being unnecessarily formal or intimidating.
You do not need to arrive knowing exactly what you need help with. We can work that out together. Equally, if you have a particular examination, assignment, dissertation or academic goal in mind, we can develop a clear plan to help you prepare.
I want students to feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and developing their understanding without unnecessary pressure.
Lessons will be recorded, so you can revisit explanations and review material in your own time. You will also receive tuition notes and/or PowerPoint presentations to support your independent study and revision. This means that you can concentrate on understanding the material during our sessions, knowing that you will have resources to refer back to afterwards.
Above all, I believe that studying law should be intellectually rewarding and enjoyable.
My aim is not simply to help you pass an examination, but to help you become a more confident, independent and capable student of law or future lawyer, whatever your starting point or ambitions.
