About Val

- What kind of experience do you have? AS FREELANCE DESIGNER As a Production Designer/Art Director/Set Dresser I collaborated with creatives such as Directors, Lighting Cameramen, Costume, Makeup, Special Effects Designers, Editors designing and producing sets and environments for Film/Commercials. The process includes concept design, mood boards, budgeting, technical drawing, sketching, model making, styling, research, set dressing and special prop design working independently and as part of the team. I produce paintings and artwork for Films and Commercials working for Production Designers and Directors and for Interiors with Designers, Architects and private clients. My licensed and original artwork has been sold in Liberty's and Selfridges. AS AN ARTIST My paintings have been exhibited at The National Portrait Gallery and is regularly selected for The Royal Portrait Society and selected for ING Discerning Eye exhibitions (selectors including Sir Peter Blake, Sir Roy Strong, Tom Coates). At the Mall Galleries. My studios are open twice a year and by appointment I was selected for the BP AWARDS 2016 at The National Portrait Gallery. The exhibition travelled to Lincoln and The Scottish Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh 2016 exhibited at The Llewellyn Alexander Gallery, London My studio is open at Wimbledon Art Studios in May and November. 2018 I am exhibiting at Aubergine Art Gallery, Wimbledon 2nd -9th June 2018 tutoring on. I was the visiting artist for a school in Kingston for two years which included running workshops on Portraiture and projects for 'Gifted and Talented Children'. Yes - Where and with whom did you train? I worked from the BBC Television Centre, London alongside a select group of talented designers & creatives for 5 years after I left university and helped me develop as a creative and set designer. I then felt at a stage where I wanted to leave to become a freelance designer for Film and TV and my own creativity continues to develop. - Tell me about some of your current students. 1. A young woman applying for a Foundation Course. 2. Working with a 12 year old boy to produce sketchbooks and a portfolio who wishes to apply for an Art Scholarship 3. Mentoring a student to present her work for her finals and herself for the professional creative world. 4. Working with a designer who wants to improve her drawing skills for the fashion business. 5. An adult, working in finance, with a passion for art and creativity who came for relaxation, inspiration... . 6. A young woman applying to study architecture, to prepare a portfolio for interviews at Universities. We are working together via skype with face to face sessions when she visits me in London.

I studied Architecture, then moved into Set Design for Film, TV and commercials. My practice now concentrates on painting including working on commissions (film, interiors, private clients) and encouraging creativity in my students. - Which subject(s) do you teach? After studying architecture I moved into Set Design at the BBC as an assistant designer alongside a group of talented designers and creatives. After 5 years I left to become a freelance Set Designer and Set Dresser for Film, TV & Commercials and have extensive experience on high quality productions working with a wide range of creatives (directors, lighting, costume, makeup) within the business. My practice now consists of painting for film & design projects and private collectors alongside working with a limited number of students. My teaching experience began as a visiting artist at schools, I then took a City & Guilds Certificate for Delivering Learning which enabled me to create sessions to suit my individual student's learning styles, abilities and needs. The art and design world continues to delight and inspire me and I aim to encourage my students to develop this aspect of their lives whether for pleasure or eventually professionally - How much do you charge? My charges are £60 hour, £50 for children below key stage 4 (including materials and references). Certain material costs additional by agreement. I can travel to you with costs will assessed on an individual basis Extra students £20 / £30 hour. - Where do you teach? I teach from my base in Wimbledon Village where the environment is good for my students with great light, space and all my references and books at hand. I have a studio at The Wimbledon Art Studios in Earlsfield and occasionally take students there. I will travel to you and also teach and mentor via Skype. I also travel abroad to students. - When are you available? I am freelance and so can be flexible with notice. - Which ages and levels do you teach? I am very happy to work with all abilities and age groups and also work in the art/design world on current projects, career development... I have experience working with learning challenges. Creativity and creative bursts can come at any age... - Which qualifications do you prepare your students for? All levels...from Primary School to University. - Describe your arrangements for online tutoring. This works really well for students outside the London area and people abroad (though I always encourage at least one face to face session if possible). I create a Bespoke design/art project and specify deadlines. Work is emailed to me (jpegs) for critiques, support and encouragement. This works well for my foreign students, still allowing me to provide inspiration and direction in order to produce high quality work. - Do you have a personal message for students? One to one tutorials are a great opportunity to explore your artistic aspirations and interests...to gain inspiration, confidence, improve practical skills and develop creativity and enjoy the journey. My desire is to inspire, support and encourage you to develop in order to help you achieve your aims and potential. Success can come in many forms, from improved grades, scholarship applications to improvements in one's own personal development.
