About Amy

My name is Amy, and I love helping others learn. I also love writing, teaching the English language, and seeing that spark when someone finally understands something. In my spare time, I am an avid reader and writer myself, and I also love to knit.

Teaching Method and Techniques:
My teaching approach focuses on engaging students through interactive lessons that cater to their individual learning styles. I employ a variety of techniques, including:
- Guided writing exercises to help students develop their skills in a structured way
- Analysis of exemplary writing pieces to identify effective techniques and strategies
- Collaborative peer review sessions to provide constructive feedback
- One-on-one coaching to address each student's specific challenges and goals
- Integration of multimedia resources to keep lessons dynamic and engaging

Typical Lesson Plan:
1. Warm-up activity (5-10 minutes): Begin with a brief writing prompt or discussion question related to the day's topic to activate prior knowledge and get students thinking critically.
2. Mini-lesson (15-20 minutes): Introduce or review a specific writing concept, technique, or skill, using examples and demonstrations.
3. Guided practice (20-30 minutes): Engage students in a structured writing activity applying the skills from the mini-lesson, providing guidance and feedback throughout.
4. Peer review (15-20 minutes): Have students exchange their work and provide constructive feedback to one another, fostering collaboration and analytical skills.
5. Independent practice (20-30 minutes): Allow students time to revise their work based on peer and teacher feedback, or to work on an extended writing project.
6. Wrap-up (5-10 minutes): Conclude with a reflection on the day's learning and a preview of upcoming lessons or assignments.

Who the Lessons are For:
My lessons are designed for secondary and post-secondary students at all levels, from those needing remedial support to those seeking to enrich their writing skills. This includes:
- High school students in general English courses or AP/IB Language and Literature courses
- College and university students in composition, literature, or writing-intensive courses across disciplines
- Adult learners looking to improve their writing skills for personal or professional development
- English language learners seeking to develop academic writing proficiency
- Students with learning differences who need a structured, multisensory approach to writing instruction

I tailor my lessons to the specific needs and goals of each student, whether they need help with foundational skills like grammar and organization or more advanced concepts like style, rhetoric, and research. My aim is to equip all my students with the tools and confidence they need to succeed as writers in any context.
