About Charles

I am a retired university professor, living in the United States of America. I was born and raised in Uganda, East Africa, but the USA has been my home for the last 46 years. I have degrees in Industrial Design, Teacher Education, Educational Communication, and Instructional Systems Technology. That is a total of 4 degrees which include two Masters and a Ph.D. I taught in American universities from 1983 and retired in 2015. I have also been an international Technical Advisor, supporting efforts of the United States Agency for International Development, in Africa. I love to teach!

About the lesson

Having learned to speak and write the English language as a non native speaker, this professor is well aware of the progressive skills required to master the language from the lowest entry level, progressing to articulate, everyday English.

Emphasis is placed on active participation throughout the lesson, which gives the learner limitless opportunities to function in different scenarios. A virtual classroom atmosphere is created whereby learners interact with one another, forming a community that endeavors to elevate their English language skills to ever-increasing levels of competence.

Each lesson is built around a behaviorally stated objective such as:
"Learners will actively participate in enacting a scene where a non speaker of English lands in a country where English is the main language of communication".

The tutor will welcome the learners individually by greeting them, using simple words and phrases, articulating the words as needed and augmenting them with simple visual aids as necessary.

The learners will spend the entire lesson listening, speaking and encouraging one another as they embark on their exciting journey of learning English.

As a tutor, I have the advantage of having an excellent command of the English language, able to function at the level of an everyday American and at the higher academic and technical levels. I also have the advantage of having learned English as a foreign language, my second language. I have experienced all the possible ups and downs of learning it; and I still get excited when I think of the first English lesson I had when I was in the second grade, when I learned how to say "Good afternoon?", followed by learning the words drum, flower, stick.

My lessons are for absolute beginners that have had no experience speaking English. They will help these learners quickly learn to speak everyday phrases and greetings, while amassing a treasury of vocabulary, the building blocks of the language.
