I met Miles in 2017 through mutual friends. He has since worked as my editor for several academic projects and I have immensely benefitted from both his linguistic as well as structural insights. Even as an editor/reader of my work Miles has been a teacher more than anything. He doesn’t believe in just ironing out mistakes, but rather that it is important to learn linguistic and grammatical rules in general and acquire tools with which to shape a logical and still creative and innovative piece of writing in particular. I have also seen Miles teaching younger journalism students at the University of Rhodes, sharing generously his insights from being an experienced journalist and editor without being patronising or hierarchical. I have always experienced Miles as a sharer of knowledge without burdening himself or his students with the conventional structures of a teacher/student relationship. Finally, I think what also makes him a wonderful teacher is his endless patience. Miles is all too often happy to explain a problem in multiple ways without making his students feel that they are not clever enough to grasp it. He has the wonderful ability to know when to hold one’s hand and when to let go of it during the teaching process.
