About Paul
I’m a native English speaker, interested in language since childhood. I studied linguistics in the final year of my classics degree at Cambridge University (1984). I have spent most of my career helping others to learn, to help themselves and to be active in the community. I have been a professional adviser, counsellor and supervisor. I have also been a manager of advice centres and volunteering centres in the UK. I have helped many people to learn new skills and overcome personal problems. I took a diploma in counselling at Bristol University in 2006, and a Master of Science degree in psychology at the University of Plymouth in 2014, which included the psychology of language and the psychology of learning. I moved to southern Charente in 2016 to experience life in rural France. In 2019 I decided to combine my interests in language and personal development and became a qualified teacher of English as a foreign language. I found I already had a high level of the interpersonal skills needed, through my decades of experience in helping people with practical and psychological problems through transformational learning.
I currently offer:
• English lessons from beginner* to advanced, and proficiency (teenagers, adults)

My teaching method is centred on you and your motivation for learning English; with each student I create a personalised lesson plan which aims to help you in all language aspects you want to learn, including speaking, listening, comprehension, vocabulary, etc. During the first free lesson we discuss in detail your needs and goals, then we set up a learning plan to help you achieve them. I listen to you carefully and aim to help you feel at ease during the lessons.
The lessons are usually based on established English Language Teaching sources such as BBC English, British Council, Cambridge English, and New Headway. Depending on your progress and needs, I use other materials to help you improve on specific aspects of the language, including texts and recordings created by English speakers for English speakers. Periodical short tests are used to assess your progress and then I give lots of homework designed to help you concentrate your learning where it will be most beneficial.
Mastering a new language helps break down cultural barriers and can open up new personal and professional opportunities. I love to see people learn and grow, and get a great sense of fulfilment and satisfaction from helping people achieve things that are important to them.
