About Ole

Hi, I’m Ole ('Ollie'), and I offer 1:1 essay coaching at senior secondary and university levels.

I hold a PhD in Philosophy and have a decade's experience as a researcher, lecturer, and tutor at university level, where (among other things) I marked hundreds of undergraduate and honours level essays. I'm currently a manager in the Victorian Public Service, where clarity of thought and precise communication is essential.

In addition to my background in academia and public service, I'm also an immigrant whose first language is not English. When I began studying in English I had to use the dictionary constantly, but I worked my way up to publishing a peer-reviewed academic book and a number of peer-reviewed articles in top journals. Everyone's journey is different, but if you're a person that aspires to excellence in a second language, I hear you, and I can help.

About the lesson

Moving ideas and paragraphs around can be frustrating, but structure is where clarity is born. When you structure your writing, you structure your thought. That's the work, so that's where we'll focus.

Almost no one produces a clearly structured essay on the first attempt, but I can help you improve your writing through a structured, iterative process.

You'll be asked to send draft work ahead of time. During the lesson, we’ll clarify what you’re trying to argue and how effectively your writing supports that argument. We’ll examine strengths and weaknesses, surface any hidden assumptions, and rebuild your essay into a clearer, more persuasive piece of writing.

I enrolled in a philosophy course on Locke and Hume at ANU in the late 2000s and Ole was my lecturer/tutor. That was the best class of my undergraduate degree and is the course that made me fall in love with philosophy. Ole's classes were always super clear and interesting. Ole is an excellent instructor, who can deliver complex ideas in a clear and palatable way. (He taught me the word " palatable" so you should expect to have a much bigger vocabulary after getting a few lessons from him). He is patient, empathetic and uses the tutoring time very constructively.
