About Tim
Before becoming a teacher, I spent 17 years working professionally as an international actor and theatre director across London, Edinburgh and New Zealand. That experience continues to shape the way I teach today, bringing creativity, communication, confidence and a genuine love of language, literature and performance into the classroom.
I hold a BA (Hons) degree and a Postgraduate qualification in Secondary Education and have more than 27 years of experience as an educator. I currently teach across English, Humanities and Drama, including VCE Drama and VCE Theatre Studies, as well as within the IB curriculum.
I believe great teaching is about far more than achieving a grade. It is about helping young people become confident thinkers, articulate communicators and independent learners.
Whether your child needs support to find their confidence, wants to strengthen their writing and analytical skills, is preparing for VCE, Select Entry or VHAP, or is striving for academic excellence, I will meet them at their current level and help them move forward.
My goal is simple: to help every student recognise what they are capable of and give them the skills to achieve it.

My approach to teaching
Every student learns differently. My role is to discover how your child learns best, where their strengths lie, what is holding them back, and what we can achieve together.
With more than 27 years of teaching experience, I know that effective tutoring is not about giving every student the same worksheet or simply correcting their mistakes. It is about understanding the individual student and giving them the strategies, confidence and skills they need to succeed independently.
I use an I Do, We Do, You Do approach. I explicitly teach and model a skill, we practise and refine it together, then the student applies that learning independently. Lessons are differentiated and carefully paced, so students are challenged without feeling overwhelmed.
Before we begin, I will ask for a sample of the student's writing. This allows me to identify existing strengths as well as the areas where targeted support will make the greatest difference. From there, I provide clear feedback and feedforward. We do not simply look at what could have been better. We establish exactly what to do next and how to do it.
Every lesson has an explicit purpose, and every student has an individual goal.
That might mean developing sophisticated essay writing, learning how to analyse a text with greater depth, strengthening paragraph structure and written expression, preparing for an assessment, mastering persuasive writing, improving reading and comprehension, or simply rebuilding confidence in English.
For students looking for greater academic challenge, I can also provide targeted preparation for Select Entry and VHAP, helping students develop the higher order thinking, writing and analytical skills these pathways demand.
Most importantly, I do not want students to become dependent on a tutor.
My goal is to teach them how to think, plan, analyse, write and improve independently.
Success will look different for every student. For one, it might mean passing an assessment they were worried about. For another, gaining entry into a selective program. For someone else, it might simply be handing in a piece of writing and finally feeling proud of it.
We determine the destination together. Then I build the learning around getting them there.
Lessons are available as either one or two hour sessions, depending on the student's individual needs and goals.
Students from Year 7 onwards, please.
