About Connor

I’m Connor, and at 33, I’m studying for my MSc at Birkbeck because my enthusiasm for learning has never really gone away. I enjoy exploring, mastering and applying difficult ideas, asking questions and finding the explanation that finally makes something click. I really enjoy sharing this enthusiasm with my students, particularly if they are not feeling good about school or education.

I also know that school can be tough. The pressure to keep up, meet deadlines and achieve certain grades can be a huge burden, especially given the range of personal issues young people contend with nowadays.

Learning can feel more stressful than rewarding. This is especially true if a student is not necessarily naturally academic or learns differently to their peers. As a person who has both Autism and ADHD, I empathise deeply with students who don't feel the benefit of any given method that a teacher at school may be using.

I want my lessons to be a place where your child can ask questions without embarrassment, work through mistakes without judgement and take pride in their progress. I take their goals seriously, but I don’t expect students to arrive feeling confident, knowing all the answers or even feeling happy to meet their tutor. It takes time to build trust and understand fully how we can make things feel achievable.

English

Hi, I’m Connor, an LLB Law graduate (2.1, University of Birmingham) currently studying for an MSc in Computing at Birkbeck College, University of London.

I studied A-Level History (A) and Government & Politics (A) as well as Advanced Higher English (A). I offer friendly, focused tutoring in English, History, Government & Politics and Law. I am passionate about helping students build solid foundations for understanding course subject matter. I make sure that their writing is an asset rather than a worry when it comes to essay writing subjects so they can approach their exams with confidence.

How I Teach

My approach is patient, structured around AQA/Edexcel/OCR curriculum but always tailored to the individual. I start by finding out what the student understands to build confidence before I start asking where they feel stuck. Then, I ask what they want to achieve and why they want to achieve this so that we can set goals and manage expectations.

From there, we break challenging topics into manageable steps and put that understanding into practice. We investigate how they learn best, or, if the student is not sure, we work together to see what makes the material stick.

Depending on the subject, sessions can include:
- Discussing key ideas and asking questions to develop independent thinking.
- Planning essays and building clear arguments where premises support conclusions.
- Working through sources, extracts and practice questions.
- Using the relevant exam board mark schemes to analyse what makes a strong answer.
- Reviewing written work together, with specific feedback and achievable next steps.

I aim to create an environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. I believe that the Socratic method is a great tool and find that students who are struggling with a subject always feel proud when they see just how much they can figure out independently.

Lesson Length

Lessons usually last 60 minutes, with time to revisit previous learning, work on a focused topic or skill and agree what to practise next. No two students are the same!

My Background

My Law degree developed my skills in research, close reading, evaluation of evidence, verbal reasoning, information collation/discrimination and constructing persuasive arguments.

Alongside my humanities qualifications, this gives me a strong foundation for supporting essay-based subjects. I bring that academic background to tutoring, with an emphasis on clear explanations, thoughtful preparation and constructive feedback. As an MSc Computer Science student, I am also adept at pattern recognition and system optimisation which is how I create a bespoke infrastructure that helps the student learn.

Who My Lessons Are For

I work with GCSE and A-Level students, typically aged 14–18, who want help with subject understanding, essay writing, revision or exam technique. I also support Year 13 students preparing to study an LLB, introducing legal reasoning and the reading and writing skills involved in studying Law along with helping students understand wider legal contexts and topical issues.

Whether a student needs help catching up or wants to strengthen their already good work, my goal is for them to leave each lesson knowing more, feeling more capable and understanding their next step so they can feel in control and excited about their education.
