About Tess

I have been writing since I could hold a pencil. I find joy in writing, and I am disappointed that so many children leave our education system feeling that writing is a source of stress, or that it isn't accessible to them.

I use my extensive knowlege of literature and the craft of writing (I have a BA in English Literature from Haverford College) to help students feel that the literary world belongs to them, too, no matter where they come from or who they are. Together we will discover what brings you joy.

Words have the power to change people. Our language is the way we connect with each other as humans; our language structures our reality. When you know how to reach out and harness that power, you have the ability to transform the way people see the world and see themselves. There is a fierce joy that comes from writing the perfect phrase or sentence, or finding the perfect word. As a teacher, I find an equally vivid joy in watching a student learn how to shape the world to their design through words.

I started teaching right after the nation-wide COVID-19 lockdown. I saw how parents were struggling to cope with their new lives as they tried to balance their jobs and careers with taking over their kids' education. As a recent college graduate without any children, I wanted to support those efforts in any way I could. Luckily for me, I ended up loving the experience of teaching, and am pursuing it for the forseeable future.

I have been writing fiction, poetry, memoir, and analytical essays for almost a decade. I have a BA in English Literature from Haverford College, and I concentrated my courses in poetry, short fiction, and Spanish.

I have been tutoring children ages 8-12 since the pandemic hit. I love the work that I do, and I come up with new ideas every time I teach. I am looking forward to expanding my tutoring network and taking on new students.

I tailor my curriculums to the individual student. My process always starts out with getting a feel for what this student is interested in, and where they have a desire to improve. Learning doesn't feel like work when it follows a student's natural interests, and my curriculums are designed to follow that vein.

I have worked with elementary and middle school students thus far, ages 8-12. However, I am open to all ages of students and can provide tutoring support to high school and college students as well.

Make sure you are comfortable with your teacher as a person. This teacher should be knowledgable in their area of expertise, but more importantly they should be someone that you feel comfortable asking questions to, and that you trust enough to be vulnerable around.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What are my learning goals? What is the best way to communicate those goals? Am I open to trying new things, or do I want to learn from a set curriculum? What kind of person do I get along with the best? Where do I tend to get stuck or frusterated during classes and activities? What challenges me most? What are some things I can ask my teacher to do that would help me navigate those rough spots?

My flat rate is $25/hour. However, more than anything I want education to be accessible, so if that rate is not an option for your family I am happy to work with you to figure out a rate that works better.
