About Richard
Hi, I'm Richard.
I've been tutoring English, academic and creative writing, college essay writing, literature, reading comprehension, and film studies for more than 20 years — and helping students find their voice is one of my greatest passions.
Working with me, you'll find a warm, empathic person who meets you exactly where you are. I don't believe in one-size-fits-all teaching. My goal is to understand how you think, what excites you, and what's holding you back — then help you move forward with confidence and genuine enjoyment of the work.
My background runs deep. I hold a Master of Arts in Literature and a Master of Fine Arts in Fiction, and I've worked across film production, publishing, marketing, and corporate communications. I'm also a published author of fiction and book reviews. That breadth of real-world experience means I don't just teach writing in the abstract — I teach it as a living, practical skill that opens doors.
In 2014, my grandfather — a WWII veteran who flew fighter planes in the Pacific — asked me to write his memoir. That experience led me to found LifeStory Memoir, my legacy writing and filmmaking company, through which I've helped more than 70 families capture and preserve their most meaningful stories. Storytelling, in every form, is at the core of everything I do.
At heart, I'm a storyteller and an empath. I love creativity, learning, and teaching — and I have a long track record of connecting with students and empowering them to express themselves more fully, more clearly, and more confidently.
