About Luciano

As an adjunct assistant professor at Brooklyn College, I've been teaching English and creative writing for four years, working with students in much the same way I would in a one-on-one tutoring session with you. In our tutorials, my aim will be to teach you how to effectively organize your ideas in clear and concise prose at your own pace by working around a foolproof plan that breaks the writing process down into manageable steps. My lessons often feature individualized brainstorming exercises; expert guidance on the conventions of genre (e.g., thesis, body paragraphs, and conclusion for essays); and developmental editing sessions in which I provide suggestions on how to improve the logic, organization, grammar, and style of your writing. If you're a high school junior or senior working on college admissions essays, I'll tailor our lessons to guide you through the process of researching and expressing your motivation to attend a specific program and pursue a particular area of study through your personal statement and/or institution-specific common application questions. As for my career background, I received a BA in English and Philosophy at Columbia University, studying abroad my junior year as an Oxbridge scholar, and later an MFA in creative writing at Brooklyn College, where I was a recipient of the Himan Brown Award in Poetry and was a contributing editor at The Brooklyn Review. In addition to teaching college-level English, I've worked as a professional editor at venues including Poets & Writers Magazine, Library of America, and Investment Reports (in partnership with Newsweek).

About the lesson

When teaching English composition, literature, or creative writing (including ESL) at the college level, I typically prepare lessons that offer individualized brainstorming sessions and exercises; expert guidance on the conventions of genre (e.g., thesis, body paragraphs, and conclusion for an essay); and developmental editing, including suggested improvements to the logic, organization, grammar, and style of a given written assignment. I also work with high school juniors and seniors on college application essays, tailoring my tutorials to each student's specific program of interest and area of study to ensure they're exceeding the expectations of even excellent applicants in their personal statement and/or institution-specific personal questions.
