About Arlen
Nice to meet you, I’m Arlen and I’m so happy you’re here! A little about me: I’m a big lover of language; I speak English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian. Each language offers a new way of looking at and understanding the world around us. Learning a new language can be a beautiful and sometimes frustrating experience, but nonetheless quite rewarding. I would be honoured to be part of your language journey!
Beyond my fascination with language, I also have a lot of experience with many facets of the English language in a multitude of subjects.
My studies include a DEC in health sciences and a Bachelor of Arts in English with a minor in psychology. I’ve worked in mental health research at McGill, and the university has continuously invited me to give lectures to masters students of occupational therapy.
On the business side, I have almost a decade of experience in many management areas including: international and national operations, human resources, marketing, training, and sales.
On the art side of things, I currently work as a professional actor, train as a dancer, and have an extensive background in gymnastics and circus.
All of these extremely varied experiences have shaped the way I use and understand English. They’ve improved my ability to communicate, my confidence, my clarity of speech, and my creativity. I want you to learn while having fun and feeling completely supported! Everyone learns differently, so I approach teaching by adapting to your needs and interests. I want to understand exactly what you’d like to improve or learn and what you may be having trouble with. I want to know what motivates and captivates you. I love to find creative ways to keep you engaged and on your toes.
Do you need help preparing for an interview? I previously worked as a hiring manager, so I know how to coach you to match the language of the job the description, and give you tips to stand out. I am more than happy to help you with your cover letter too!
Do you have to give a presentation? Working as an actor, I have endless tips and tricks to help you find focus, be clear in your delivery, help memorize what you have to say, and to say it with ease’s and confidence.
Are you having trouble with pronunciation and enunciation? Voice work and diction are a big part of my everyday. My knowledge of five languages and extensive accent work have given me a lot of insight on how and where we create sounds, so we can work on those tricky sounds. I can give you physical tools and exercises that you can practice with both in and outside of class.
Are you simply looking to improve your conversation skills? Practice makes perfect! Practice can be fun, especially when the conversation is interesting. I have an endless curiosity and I’m excited to get you talking. Some of my interests include: langues, art, cooking, baking, psychology, anthropology, science, business, dance, media, tv, cinema, and so much more!
