About Kelsey

My background is in jazz, pop, contemporary classical music and theatre. I have worked as a session singer for film and television soundtracks including celebrated composer Jocelyn Pook's soundtrack for Stanley Kubrick's last film 'Eyes wide shut'. I've also toured live with pop band The The and featured on a number of albums by The High Llamas. These days I am a recording and performing artist and music producer. I perform with my Penzance based Trio. I've been teaching singing lessons for thirty years and very much enjoy seeing singers progress. The human voice is extraordinary in its capacity to move and inspire us, and the singing of songs is a special form of communication which I feel privileged to work with.

About the lesson

My approach to teaching is fun, physical and freeing. I aim to help you sing with freedom and ease, improve your pitch and tone, and grow the confidence to move into your unique voice. I offer lessons in my studio in Penzance, Cornwall or online. Lessons are normally one hour long and generally take place weekly or fortnightly. Whether you are a professional singer, in education or training (lower rates available for students and under 18s), or simply someone who loves singing, I would love to work with you. From age 9 - 90 singing lessons can enhance your life. I have a lot of experience of working with unconfident singers and those with health conditions. I'm a natural voice practitioner who continually undertakes professional development. We will start with a physical and vocal warm-up to unlock areas of tension in the body. Improving your singing is a process of isolating the muscles you want to support your voice and letting go of those you don't want to be getting involved - those which bring strain into your vocalising and limit your range and ability. Each lesson is tailor-made for your individual needs as every singer is different. After an initial introductory process, I will home in on the issues you most need help with, this could be; improving tone, pitching, accessing high notes with confidence, finding ease with breath... These are but a few examples of many possible areas. I will then build a programme with your input, to open up your full singing potential, including vocal exercises with the piano to strengthen your body support and improve your range. Throughout the process you will be choosing the songs you would like to sing. I can also suggest songs where appropriate, helping you to create a repertoire you love and find a way to take it out into the world. I can work with all kinds of Popular music, Jazz, Folk, World music, Musical Theatre. Young students have gone on to study singing, songwriting and musical theatre. I have a particularly good track record helping singers of all ages to grow the confidence to sing out in community venues, pubs and open mikes. Other areas of expertise include offering songwriting support and mentoring.
