Greetings,
Most students regard “limit” as a maximum, but it can also be a minimum.
This direction is confusing, and was probably written in a hurry then not proof-read.
If the learning target is to have students write an essay of at least 1000 words, it could have been more clearly phrased.
“Please compose an essay of 1000–1200 words” clearly states the expectation.

Class is the temple where we are going for study and teaching profession. for me.
Prepare the lesson plan diligently. It is the lesson plan that allows you identify key junctures where you need to pause and take a dip stick test of how much your students have absorbed and internalised. Think of an apt question to ask at that juncture and record it as part of the lesson plan. Now when you go to the class, follow the lesson plan to the T. Try not to deviate from it as far as possible.
A second step that is usually done is to take up key aspects and repeat it in the form of a quiz or a quick recall the next class. One this helps the class recollect. Two, it provides a second chance to the students who failed to grasp the concept the first time. I do it a third time in my third class before going ahead with the day’s lessons. The “Aha!, I get it” moment happens at different times for different students in the class. Usually I find that about 70% or more students get it the first time, 20% get it the second time and the remaining 10% over the next few repetitions.
