When I teach English, I teach it as a language and not so much as a subject. I focus on the grammar part only as much as it's necessary. Instead, I try to give my students an intuitive feeling of English language so that in due course of time, they can gradually learn to comprehend English as a language without needing much memorization of grammar rules.
This helps the students not just perform better in English academically but all of my students have also begun to speak (not fluently but it's a start) even if they are not in my spoken English class.
