About Ben

I have taught from the age of 14 since I passed my grade 8. I am now 32, have been in countless bands. I studied at Leeds Conservatoire and graduated in popular music and production. I also work in mortgage so I'm not a full time musician, however drumming has always been my passion and I like to share that with others.

About the lesson

I will start by assessing your current level, your goals and go from there. It will be a very laid back approach where I initially work out what you want from me. Whether that be to move through the grades and understand how to read drum music yourself, or to simply play to songs you know. What I have generally learnt is that some people want to learn from the ground up, and others do not want to learn how to read but simply play some rhythms they can jam to their favourite songs. It's really up to you, however initially I always start by teaching people a simple beat to learn. This gives people the itch to learn more as they can start to improvise themselves and really become passionate about it rather than learn strict patterns through sheet music. Learning grades is however, a very good way to improve as they slowly go up in difficulty, giving you a very feel good factor if you can reach higher grades of playing. As I said I never really start with any theory, mainly I start by teaching all newcomers a simple beat and go from there. Very laid back approach, and don't worry, you can ask the same question as many times as you want. In my experience, learning things YOUR way, is always the best way, as everyone has a slightly different way of taking information in.
