About Octavian

How I Work

Every student starts with a full diagnostic test under timed conditions. Before we cover a single topic, I need to know exactly where points are being lost: timing, specific question types, careless errors under pressure, or real gaps in knowledge. The study plan is built entirely around that diagnosis. There’s no generic syllabus.

Math. I focus on the areas that consistently separate a 1400 student from a 1550+ student: advanced algebra, data interpretation, multi-step problem solving, and the discipline to avoid errors when it matters most. I don’t spend time on material a student already handles well. Every session is targeted.

Reading and Writing. I teach a systematic approach to passage analysis and evidence-based questions that works reliably across every question type on the test. High scores here aren’t about reading speed or vocabulary; they come from a learned method applied consistently. My years of academic research at Oxford shaped that method, and it’s what I teach.

Built for endurance. My sessions run 2.5 to 3 hours, and that’s deliberate. The SAT is 2 hours and 14 minutes of continuous, high-intensity work. A student who has only ever studied in one-hour blocks will hit a concentration wall at exactly the wrong moment on test day. Longer sessions build the stamina the exam demands, so by test day, 2 hours and 14 minutes feels entirely normal. Stamina is a trainable skill, and most tutors never train it.

What students receive:

A personalized study plan with weekly targets
Full-length practice tests at regular intervals
A written report after every session covering performance, weaknesses, and exactly what to work on next

Progress is measurable from the first month.

Sessions are held in person in Manhattan. Consistent scheduling is essential for real score improvement, so cancellations with less than 24 hours’ notice are charged in full.

SAT Tutoring for 1500+ | Oxford-Trained Physicist and Mathematician | Tutoring Since 2009

I’m a full-time private tutor and Oxford-trained researcher specializing in SAT preparation for students aiming at the Ivy League and the most selective US universities.

In a city where top applicants routinely post scores above 1500, the score alone no longer sets a student apart; the last 50 to 100 points do. That’s where I focus. The gap between 1450 and 1550 is almost always in Reading and Writing, which rewards close reading, precise grammar, and a real feel for how arguments are built. I teach those skills directly rather than relying on test tricks.

My background is in Physics and Mathematics, with an MSc from Oxford, an MSc from Paris, and a BEng from Toulouse. That means my Math preparation goes well beyond technique. Students learn the underlying mathematics properly, so they can solve problems they’ve never seen before instead of matching patterns from practice tests. That’s what produces scores at the very top of the range.

My results at the highest levels are documented. One student scored 1580 (a perfect 800 in Math and 780 in Reading and Writing), a score central to his successful Ivy League applications. Another earned 42 points in the full IB Diploma while preparing for the SAT, and was admitted to an Ivy League university. These results aren’t outliers; they reflect what’s possible when the right preparation meets real commitment.

I also work with students considering Europe’s leading universities and business schools, including Bocconi, Sciences Po, IE, ESADE, SSE Stockholm, and Frankfurt School.

I take on a small number of students at a time, and only those serious about their target score. If you’re aiming for 1500+ and ready to put in the work, get in touch.
